We got the Al Pastore Burger with a Groupon and it was pretty solid. I do wish there was a little bit more pork and a bigger slice of pineapple but overall it was pretty good flavor and a touch messy just the way I like it. The one drawback was the place was hard to find but once we got there the employees were really cool, giving me side cups to sample some of the different sauces that I was asking questions about. We also got the lamb Gyro burrito which was pretty good and fueled us up for our trip back to the east coast.
Review for the Ahi Tuna Poke BOWL - not quite what I expected per the photo on Toast Tab but I should have read the description. Good but I would love if they would add avocado, cucumber, cilantro... just something fresh! Especially at this price point
Do NOT be fooled by the sparse decor in this joint, the food will make you feel like you've died and gone to foodie Heaven...so you'll be seeing lights and hearing sirens any way! My husband ordered the Lamb Gyro tacos, and he loved those. My little cousin ordered the Potato Taco, and she said the potatoes were perfectly seasoned. I got one Samurai taco and the Soft Shell Crab sandwich. For me, the whitefish in the samurai taco was perfect, and the jalapeños paired perfectly with the sweet, a nice juxtaposition of sweet and spicy. But for me, the star of the show was the Soft Shell Crab! Man oh man, seasoned, battered and fried to PERFECTION, the soft shell crab was simply scrumptious. Crispy, sweet and savory - I'll return again and again for these soft shell crabs. Also, truffle fries were on point. Overall, worthy of the 5 stars!!!
I Grubhub'd the Samurai Taco and Hawaiian Pork Taco, both of which were very good. I think I ~maybe~ liked the Hawaiian Pork better. I also got the Caramel Churro - a delicious dessert.
I went back to the original Big & Little that was featured on both Mystery Diners w/Charles Stiles & Diners, Dives & Drive ins w/Guy Fieri. I originally found out about the Big & Little on Mystery Diners @ 860 N Orleans many years ago. Since then they have branched out and opened & closed several other locations. There are currently 3 Big & Littles that are still open * Original location @ 860 N Orleans - River North * 1034 W Belmont Ave - * 1310 N Milwaukee - Wicker Park There is one in Midway Airport but it's temporarily closed & there was a 5th location on the corner of Fullerton & Sacramento Ave that has also closed and is now a pizza restaurant. This time I ordered a soft shell crab sandwich & Ahi Tuna taco. The Ahi tuna taco ($6) was yummy w/plenty of tuna stuffed in a hard taco shell. The soft shell crab sandwich was also very good but personally I feel it could have been better ($12) by frying the soft shell crab longe & making it a crispier texture & putting cabbage to add to the crispy texture. There was also a little too much sauce that took the crispiness out of the soft shell (4 Stars) The original restaurant is sort of a dive. I did get a Groupon which allowed me to get $20 worth of food for $10.96 (special price at the time (normally $12.50)). FYI - Big & Littles runs Groupon's all the time $20 for $12.50 so unless you enjoy spending more more check out Groupon. Honestly the first time I went to Big & Littles I thought it was the Bees Knees but since have changed my opinion after eating at 2 Big & Littles. It's so hard to give it 5 stars w/so many varied and different taco joints in the city One other note is the parking lot to the north isn't there's it's used by Spot Hero
This place popped up a few times catching my eye, so of course after creeping on Instagram I decided to head over. After driving around Chicago and quickly learning how horrid it is to find a parking spot this place immediately pleased me by offering a place to leave my vehicle! Walking in, I was pleasantly intimidated by all the food options that were available. After chatting it up with the staff member (don't remember your name and awkwardly have to call you staff member--sorry!), I decided to get a taco from each category. I ordered the samurai, mango chutney, and Japanese beef taco. Overall the tacos were all good! As a huge taco connoisseur, these weren't the top notch, blow your wig off kinda tacos, but definitely worth checking off the list of places to try in Chicago for tacos. I enjoyed the seafood spin that this place offered to it's menu as well as the hefty sized tacos and the many options. Considering I didn't get to try much of the taco or seafood scene while out in Chi-Town, this was a decent stop for both of these fixes. I'd come back and try some more!
Don't judge a book by its cover. The restaurant is located off the beaten path. It's a block away from street lights, the door on the street is closed and you have to enter through a side parking lot. Go through the blue doors into a small restaurant. A chalk board menu with foie gras fries and soft shelled crab. This place is gourmet food in a fast food setting with fast food prices. I had the foie gras fries and a hot dog with everything. The foie gras was the most I have ever had on a single dish. Two giant seared pieces of foie gras over a bed of fresh cut, piping hot fries. The foie gras melted onto the hot fries coating them. The fries were so rich, this dish needs to be shared. The hot dog was grilled to perfection, the relish was electric green. Sliced tomato, pickles, diced red onions, and whole chilies to complete the dish. The heat level and saltines was perfect, maybe even umami. You have to try this place. 10 stars if I could.
In all fairness I ordered this food delivered, so I'm not going to comment on aspects that didn't travel well (such as the fries), as I'm sure they're much better at the restaurant. What did travel well was the raw ahi tuna taco. The tuna was obviously excellent sushi grade, and the large chunks were still cold, and the fried taco shell crisp. The other noteworthy item was the deep-fried grilled cheese sandwich. It was essentially fish and chips, except instead of fish there was a grilled cheese sandwich in there. The batter was nice and crisp, but I felt it needed a bit of seasoning, or perhaps the Swiss cheese version (rather than American cheese) is more flavorful. The cheeseburger was a bit of a disappointment. It basically tasted exactly like a Big Mac. I also sampled the Samurai fish taco, which was an okay combination of fried fish and pickled jalapenos on flour tortillas.
